Editor’s note: This summary article was extracted from an article title “Achieving complete restroom care,” written by Steve Schultz and originally appeared in Cleaning & Maintenance Magazine.

The restroom is a key part to any kind of business. Having a dirty restroom can have a negative effect upon the business. For instance, if a hotel or restaurant has a dirty restroom people are more likely to not go there. Or the place is more prone to receiving bad reviews. Reviews are essential to your business also. Researchers from Harvard Business School found that Yelp reviews can have a 5 to 9 percent effect on business revenues.

With this all being said it is evident that restroom cleanliness should be a top priority for any company. However, having a clean restroom is by no means an easy task. Not only do you have to deal with individuals constantly using the facilities, but you also have to make sure that you are getting the right products for cleaning and disinfecting. After you have your materials you are going to want to use them. However at this point you may be asking yourself what steps I should be taking to guarantee restroom cleanliness.

The first step that should be taken to ensure restroom cleanliness is to attack urine stains and odors. Getting rid of this is one of the toughest challenges. It is proven that three out of four American consumers are disgusted by urine stains and odors in public restrooms, hence the reason why it is a major concern. One major issue pertaining to urine odor is that many of the products simply mask the odors with air freshener. When attacking odors remember the following. First, in order to eliminate odors for long lasting, you must breakdown the uric acid crystals. Not only must you break them down, but you have to remove the source of the odor, not just mask them. Secondly, Porous damp surfaces hold bacteria, which feed on urine in humid conditions. Just wetting the surface can in fact reactivate the odor. So to handle this situation look for products that work on hard and soft surfaces and make them part of your everyday cleaning routine. Thirdly, you want to make sure that you avoid bathroom cleaners that can be diluted. Lastly, use hydrogen- peroxide based cleaners to help remove stains and odors. As previously stated porous surfaces trap odors and urine, and is prone to stains. So you want to look for products that penetrate deep into surfaces to eliminate the stain.

The second step to implement in order to obtain restroom cleanliness is to clean the air. A lot of times urine crystals, which are found in the restrooms grout, is the source of odors. So in order to eliminate the odor you must get rid of the source. In order to remove odors from the air you should use an aerosol product that has an active ingredient to kill airborne odor-causing bacteria’s.

The next step to take in helping with complete restroom cleanliness is to make sure to disinfect surfaces that are touched frequently. Restrooms have some of the most contaminated surfaces in them including sinks, counter tops, door handles, etc…. To prevent the spread of bacteria from the surfaces to people using the facility remember these three key things. First, make sure you select products that are U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registered to kill bacteria. Second, follow the labels regarding contact time. Let the product stay on as long as needed before removing. Finally, make sure to get a disinfectant with a short kill time and a wide range. These tend to provide the best value due to the fact that they do more with less.

The last step to follow to warrant complete and utter bathroom sanitation is not only focus on disinfecting. The cleaning professional should also be sure to attack mold and mildew soap scum, streaks and watermarks, soils and everyday soils found in restrooms. Let’s first talk about soap scum. In order to ensure that this is gone you need to get a product that breaks down soap scum quickly and removes it from surfaces. If you are having issues with mold or mildew, then make sure to obtain products that deal with those issues. You also want to make sure you use a multi surface cleaner for floors to keep them dry, clean, and smelling fresh. Finally, make sure you mirrors and any kind of glass surfaces are clean too.

As previously stated having a clean bathroom facility is essential. It may be essential, but it is not an easy task to achieve. However, if you follow these steps and take the advice laid forth, then your bathroom will be looking and smell brand new every day.
