Food Contamination Statistics
We live in an ever changing world that, seems to change faster as time goes on. But what is not changing is our growing populations need to eat. The global food and beverage industry is growing at around 5% a year and global expenditure on food products by consumers is expected to reach US$20 trillion by 2030. Key trends for new product development are in health, convenience, naturality and sustainability. While this growth happens we are also working on making food safer and Healthier.
So how are things trending? At the moment recalls are still growing. The average cost of a significant recall is around $12 million, some even argue that with the ripple effect it can be billions. Social Media and the increased speed of communications can exaggerate the impact to food brands almost unmeasurably.
Food Contamination is estimated to cost the US food industry $55 billion, and 48 million Americans fall ill every year from food contamination.
As of January 2019 there has already been a large number of recalls. There have been seven recalls of meat food products for possible foreign material contamination. This has affected more than 427,000 pounds of food.
